Mad Men? No, just serious about furniture.
In the days when milk was delivered to your door and the pubs closed at six a furniture design company in Christchurch was proud of it’s products and ambitious with plans for the future. Looking very dapper in their suits, these were the men behind the early success of our company.
In the late sixties these images capture a typical day at work in our Mowbray Street factory in Sydenham. This factory was set up by Stephen & Maria Kovacs in 1963, first as Atlas and then later as Vertex Continental Furniture. In 1983 the name change to Kovacs would occur with the move into the Australian market.
Since then a lot has changed, but much has stayed the same. Now, with Johnny and Hildy Kovacs running the business, the family continues to oversee a thriving local business. While our workplace attire may have become somewhat more relaxed our dedication to quality, artisan design endures.
